Rosewood School

Rosewood School is a non-maintained special school run by the Rose Road Association. There are a total of thirty places, all funded by Southampton City Council. We cater for pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties between the ages of two and nineteen years. There are currently twenty seven pupils on roll, fifteen boys and twelve girls.

The school moved to brand new purpose built premises in December 2003. The classrooms are light, airy and very spacious with ceiling track hoists and adjustable tables and kitchen areas. There are Sensory Gardens with wheelchair accessible play equipment, an interactive Hydrotherapy Pool, a state of the art Sensory Room, a Soft Play Room and a Food Technology Room.

The curriculum at Rosewood focuses on Key Skill Development using the National Curriculum to provide a breadth of experience. Every pupil has an IEP, with targets set in each key skill, designed to meet their individual needs and priorities.

The aim of the school is to offer the highest possible standards of education and therapy within a stimulating environment.

Admission Arrangements

Recommendation for admissions has to come from Southampton Local Education Authority. Hampshire LEA also place pupils at Rosewood, but liaise directly with Southampton who send the referrals on to us. In addition we are often approached by parents of older pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties who wish to transfer their sons or daughters to our school.

All 'new' parents are invited to visit us with their children and spend time together in school with their new class and the school staff. We recognise that discussion and information sharing between the teaching staff and parents is essential to ensure that the needs of all new pupils at Rosewood School are met.

Travel

Pupils are transported to and from school by minibus or contracted taxi, funded by the pupils funding Authority. All buses are fitted with seat belts and wheelchair clamps and every child has individual seating arrangements, which meet Health and Safety recommendations. Pupils are accompanied on their journey by approved escorts, who are employed by the pupils funding authority. The two school minibuses are equipped with tail lifts, which are adapted for wheelchairs and are used for educational trips.

Special Educational Needs

Rosewood School is a Special School; all its pupils therefore have significant Special Educational Needs (SEN). Some pupils may have SEN of a particular kind, which may mean they require alternative provision or supervision, which is different from the other pupils, usually this is a temporary need. For example, a particular medical need while they are recovering from a period of illness.

Rosewood School offers a high staff ratio and a highly individualised programme so all needs of this type would be looked at and assessed on an individual basis. Assessment is the responsibility of the class teacher unless there are particular medical needs, in which case it is the responsibility of the School Nurse in conjunction with the Head of Therapy.
